Corruption eating away the Nation

In Transparency International's annual survey of the extent of corruption in countries ,India cuts a sorry figure as number 85 a good 13 notches below its ranking 72nd in the 2007 survey. Pakistan Nepal,Bangladesh & Sri Lanka may fare worse on the index ,but they ought not to be our models.

India's average growth rate between year 2001 and 2007 was less than 7 percent a year. Given that population too is growing at about 1.8percent a year that translates in to a per capia income gain of around 5 percent annualy. This isn't sufficient to spread prosperity all around. According to the United Nations development Proramme India’s official corruption cuts India’s GDP by a quarter. We all say that India is now a trillion dollar economy now ,but according to management expert C K Prahlad ,if India were to cut corruption to the level that exists in the US it will add USD20 trillion to its GDP.

Corruption is hurting poors most , because the rich and the middle classes rely more on their own resources. Though some efforts are being made like Right to Information Act
And the posting of the Comptroller and Auditor general on internet the complains.
Politicians and businessmen need ito resist patronizing bureaucrats & law and order officials to further their own prospects. Bureaucracies ,police services and the judiciary must be reformed to provide less incentive to corruption. Above all offenders must not be just warned or charged with fine but they should be punished as per laws ,so that would set an example for others to not imitate the same act in future
